Grandfather Clock

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I over-wind a spring driven clock?

A: Using normal hand pressure you can not over-wind a spring driven antique clock.

Q: My clock is 30 years old will oil make it work again?

A: It is common for clocks to need a major service every 30 years. So if you have a modern American Grandfather clock from the 1980's, oiling is not likely to get your clock working correctly.

Q: Will moving the clock hands backwards damage my clock?

A: There are thousands of clock designs and only some of the older designed movements will be damaged by moving the clock hands backwards. Most modern clocks allow the clock hands to be moved backwards. The reason you would move the clock hands backwards is so that the chiming mechanism will not be tripped.
